What you need to know about the Nigeria Governors’ Forum High-Level Roundtable

The high-level gathering, is an opportunity for states to discuss ways to improve energy access for their citizens.

What is it?

This high-level gathering, funded by FCDO and facilitated by UKNIAF, is an opportunity for states to discuss ways to improve energy access for their citizens.

What is the Roundtable’s purpose?

At the roundtable, states will discuss ways to enhance energy access, while listening to input from experts in subnational electricity markets.

Who will be there?

The roundtable will host a range of interested parties. Apart from the organisers, the event sponsors, the expert speakers, and the facilitators; the attendance list includes international donors as well as Nigerian national stakeholders such as electricity generation, transmission, and distribution companies, the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, and several regional commissions, Federal ministries, and development agencies.

Why is it important?

The recently legislated Electricity Act allows states to generate their own electricity. The discussions at this event will focus on how the states can cooperate to form a subnational electricity market.

What will be the result?

After the roundtable, we hope the states will be able to clearly identify the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities offered by the new Act, as well as strategies for navigating emerging ongoing discussions between the states and other stakeholders.

When is it?

The roundtable will be held over two days in Abuja, from the 26th and 27th of October 2023.
