UKNIAF’s Power Component delivers targeted technical assistance to key Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in the Power value chain to enhance institutional capacity and drive climate-smart infrastructure planning, delivery and ongoing use. Our efforts align with the Electricity Act 2023, Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the country’s Energy Transition Plan, accelerating access to reliable, high-quality electricity services.

Supporting a Contract-Based Market with Regulatory Strengthening

A contract-based electricity market is essential for improving efficiency and expanding access. However, its success depends on strong, independent, and effective regulation. UKNIAF is working closely with the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to enhance data access, enabling evidence-based regulatory interventions that support a fair and functional market.

Protecting Vulnerable Consumers

While a contract-based market can boost efficiency, it may disproportionately impact low-income consumers if not designed inclusively. UKNIAF is taking a proactive approach by working with regulators to safeguard the lifeline tariff for the poorest consumers. Through cross-market subsidies, more economically empowered users will help sustain affordable electricity access for those in need.

To further strengthen consumer protection, UKNIAF is supporting enhanced customer interface mechanisms for NERC and Distribution Companies (DisCos) to improve engagement and service delivery.Customer enumeration to ensure the poor are accurately counted and included in policy planning.

Expanding Off-Grid Access for Social Impact

Beyond the grid, UKNIAF is advancing off-grid electricity solutions to expand energy access for poor and marginalised communities, to expand energy access for poor women and other ‘left-behind’ demographic groups at community level. By promoting resilient and sustainable energy models, we aim to unlock economic and social opportunities, contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable energy future for Nigeria.
